Belfort Furniture has a new line of Furniture from Bernhardt that brings old Hollywood to life with a modern touch. Since this furniture line brings old Hollywood style to life, we thought we'd tell you a bit more about that Hollywood sign that has been around since the 1920's and has become the Hollywood icon recognized around the world.

Did you know that the original Hollywood sign read "HOLLYWOODLAND"and its purpose was to advertise the name of a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles? It was advertised as a "superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills".

Each letter of the sign was 30 feet wide and 50 feet high, and the whole sign was studded with some 4,000 light bulbs. The sign would flash in segments; "HOLLY," "WOOD," and "LAND" would light up individually, before lighting up entirely. Below the Hollywoodland sign was a searchlight to attract more attention. The poles that supported the sign were hauled to the site by mules. The sign was officially dedicated on July 13, 1923. It was not intended to be permanent.

The sign has become an icon for Hollywood, but through the years it has been the site of numerous accidents, controversy and renovations. It was originally constructed to last for only 18 months and the sign has survived the times and symbolized Hollywood old and new. Like the sign, the classic sophisticated, old Hollywood style has also survived the times.

The Bernhardt clean lines, softly bowed curves in a chocolate brown Merlot finish and top grain cream colored leather cushions on the chairs lead to a clean and sophisticated look.
